Getting Connected After You Land: SIM, eSIM and the Apps That Matter

Connectivity in China has two layers: getting a data connection (easy) and what that connection can reach (the part people forget). Sort both before you land and the arrival is painless.

Your three options

eSIM (our default recommendation for short trips) Buy a China eSIM from a reputable international provider before you fly. It installs over Wi-Fi at home and connects the moment the plane doors open. Because your traffic routes outside mainland China, your usual apps — WhatsApp, Google Maps, Instagram — keep working normally. Typical cost: US$5–20 for 1–5 GB.

Physical SIM at CKG airport (best value for long stays) Counters on the arrivals level sell tourist SIMs; bring your passport for registration. Expect roughly ¥50–100 for a month of generous data. You get a Chinese number — handy for hotel registrations and courier calls. Your traffic stays inside China, so blocked apps stay blocked without a roaming layer.

Home-plan roaming (the zero-setup fallback) Works immediately, keeps your apps working like at home, and costs the most. Fine for a 72-hour visit; painful for a week.

The firewall, honestly

If you use a Chinese SIM or local Wi-Fi without any routing trick, WhatsApp, Google services, Instagram and most Western news sites simply won’t load. Travellers handle this three ways: foreign eSIM/roaming (simplest), a roaming layer on a Chinese SIM, or their own VPN arrangement installed before arrival. Choose at home, not at the airport.

The app list we install for guests

AppWhy
Amap (Gaode)The maps locals use; full English mode, better data than anything else in Chongqing’s multi-level streets
AlipayPayments + metro/bus codes (see our payments guide)
WeChatMessaging + backup payment; some vendors only show WeChat codes
DidiRide-hailing with English UI and in-app payment
Pleco or Apple TranslateOffline Chinese dictionary; camera translation for menus
Trip.com / 12306Train tickets — book high-speed rail with English interface
AirVisualChongqing fog is famous; air quality is usually fine but check before hikes

Practical arrival sequence

  1. Land, connect to CKG free airport Wi-Fi.
  2. Activate the eSIM (or buy the physical SIM at the counters).
  3. Install/open Amap, verify it locates you, pin your hotel using the Chinese address from your booking.
  4. Test Alipay with a ¥3 bottle of water at the arrivals convenience store. If that works, everything else will.

Two more things: WhatsApp messages to our team work on any of the three options above, and your Concierge can walk you through each screen live if anything refuses to cooperate.

Last verified November 2026. eSIM providers and prices change often; the firewall situation does not.
